Without their persistent help this dissertation would not have been possible.Chapter 1GENER AL INTRODUCTIONMasonry construction utilizes different materials for developing masonry structures; such components include reinforcing steel, grout, mortar, and masonry units. The masonry structure strength depends upon the interactions of the aforementioned components. Construction of masonry prisms is undertaken using grout, mortar, and concrete masonry units (CMUs). The specific compressive strength for masonry is denoted as 'm, which an engineer specifies; and it is utilized throughout the design procedures of masonry. This kind of strength features lower and upper bounds that the Building CodeRequirements and Specification for Masonry Structures (the code) (MSJC, 2008). This chapter reviews previous works on masonry prisms, beams, and walls.Masonry construction activities are physically demanding and have high risks of work-based injuries. This is caused by undertaking heavy physical tasks that include grouting, laying bricks/ blocks, handling bricks/blocks, dismantling and er ecting scaffolds (Davis 2002; Spielholz 2006). For example, a standardized Concrete Masonry Unit with dimensions of 8816 weighs between 28 and 35 lb, and masons typically lays between 150 and 250 CMUs each working day. Within brick masonry works, a mason lays an average 1000 bricks every day (Schneider Susi 1994). Masons are required to bend, twist and lift while laying blocks/bricks. Laying such a quantity of blocks/bricks every day could trigger considerable physical load, leading to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) among masons. According to a recent report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (2009), masonry construction is considered a high risk specialty trade with non-fatal incident rates of 191.5% for every 10,000 equivalent full-time employees as well as 2,640 recorded injuries. Schneider and Susi (1994) discovered that masonry possessed the second ranked incidence rate for all trades of construction over injuries with gone working days because of overexertion arisin g from lifting. Additionally, they reported that associated costs from medical care for masons appeared highest for all construction works.As cited earlier, masonry work features a considerable physical demand (Hess et al. 2010; Entzel et al. 2007). Van der Molen et al. (2004) discovered that most demanding activities were one-handed repetitive brick lifting as well as two-handed block lifting. For the laborers (mason assistants) pulling/ pushing wheelbarrows, carrying materials, and manual lifting for over four hours every day emerged as the most physically demanding tasks.According to BLS (2009), in 2008, being struck by the objects accounted for the many masonry work injuries with a figure of 27%, falls came in second with 21% and overexertion was ranked third with 12% for all masonry related injuries. The most common muscoskeletal disorder (MSD) among masons was low back pain (LBP) followed by neck, knee, and wrist/hand injuries (Construction Safety Association of Ontario 2008; Goldsheyder et al. 2002).Additionally, masonry workers come into contact with harmful substances including Silica dust, which can trigger severe respiratory illness and in some cases fatality (Occupational Safety Health Administration, 2002). Different studies have suggested some controls aimed at reducing the MSD risks within masonry tasks. Such controls comprise of using equipments for lifting blocks of more than 40 1b, pumping mortar to platforms, block/brick stacks to about 50cm (1.7 feet), and adjustable scaffolds for keeping working height in between 60 and 90 cm (Fabers et al. 2009, Schneider Susi 1994, Davis 2002). Other research have suggested engineering controls such as using lightweight blocks (Hess et al. 2010; Van der Molen et al. 2008; Anton et al. 2005) in reducing masonry workers ergonomic loads.According to BLS (2009), masonry construction claiming 23 fatalities alongside a 0.012 fatality per 100 equivalent workers on full-time basis is not considered as high fa tality risk trade. Falls from elevated points with 43.5% as well as contact with the objects having 30.5% of all accident cases constitute the major masonry construction fatality causes of fatalities. The aforementioned statistics strongly indicate that masonry workers safety should be accorded significant attention.Seemingly, masonry structures constitute the popular construction style of low-rise structures in both developing and developed countries globally (Ghorbani et al., 2013). According to Frankie et al. (2013), such buildings account for over 75% of building populations in several countries. The focus of this literature review is to determine the previous research work completed on (i) .. (ii).., and (v).1.1.1 Compression Testing of Masonry PrismsDrysdale and Hamid (2008, 1979) provided an understanding regarding the best testing methodology for acquiring the compressive strength of masonry. These studies conducted tests on masonry prisms made of half block units and as well as made of full block units to determine the eff ect of block unit size on the compressive strength of the masonry prism. The results revealed that utilizing half block in the prism specimens provides similar outcomes as obtained from full block prism specimens (Drysdale and Hamid, 1979). The study concluded that the block size in laboratory prism testing may be smaller compared to those utilized in actual construction; however, the results obtained from prisms made of reduced size units in the lab can provide accurate prediction of compressive strength.The masonry strength is also dependent upon the component interaction in the masonry structural system. Extensive investigation of the component interaction in the prism specimen subjected to axial compression load was completed. These studies founded considerable effect of individual component strength on the compressive strength of masonry prism specimens. It was concluded that the strength of fully grouted masonry prism specimen is dependent less on mortar joints; hence, increas ing the strength of mortar joint twice reduces the compressive strength by 3% for grouted prisms and 16% for hollow prisms (Drysdale Hamid, 1979). Additionally, small differences in the thickness of mortar joints could be overcome easily. Baldwins Fiction Liminal Agency and the Condition of Blackness - Literature Essay Samples

James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk and â€Å"The Man Child† are both texts that demonstrate how the isolation of characters can yield overtly violent outcomes. Though the perspective from which Baldwin challenges dominant forces differs between the two texts, the race of the protagonists seems to be the underlying factor in how the characters experience and combat their own oppression, if they experience it at all. These varying forms of oppression range from gender inequality to hate crimes, but Tish and Fonny’s families are subjected to a condition by which they are trapped in their isolation and status with no viable way of escape. There are numerous similarities between the characters in If Beale Street Could Talk and â€Å"The Man Child†, but Baldwins black characters do not have the agency to exist in a space that fosters freedom, agency, or even love; those who face similar oppressive forces experience them differently specifically due to th e fact that white characters are not subjected to a hellish wasteland. As Baldwin expresses though both narratives, those who are able to exist comfortably within the confines of American ideology experience a life that is less constricted by oppressive forces. Early on in If Beale Street Could Talk, Tish expresses the constrictive nature of the corridors both in prison and in the church. Tish as describes the situation, â€Å"I swear New York must be the ugliest and the dirtiest city in the world†¦If any place is worse, it’s got to be so close to hell that you can smell the people frying. And, come to think of it, that’s exactly the smell of New York in the summertime† (Beale Street, 9). Whether considering New York or in Puerto Rico, Baldwin describes both places as literal and metaphorical wastelands that people of color are forced to inhabit. In â€Å"The Man Child,† Eric and his family view the space and land that they own as representing opportunity through the patriarchal pursuit of happiness. While Jaime is, perh aps, ostracized in comparison to Eric’s family, he is still a white male and thus has the means and opportunity to gain a stronghold within the American landscape. As Baldwin writes, â€Å"Eric rode his father’s shoulders through the wide green fields which belonged to him, into the yard which held the house which would hear the first cries of his children† (The Man Child, 74). The land for Eric’s relatives is something they have the opportunity to own because their space is neither limiting nor suppressing. Eric’s inherited land thus becomes a physical representation of an American idealism which breeds hope as well as of agriculture: both are key values in American philosophy. The contrasting nature of these two texts and how space is perceived in them demonstrates how Baldwin proclaims that the differences between black and white families cause black families to experience hell on earth while white families experience power through ownership. Despite Baldwin’s tendency to write from male perspectives, he does not shy away from exploring the roles of women in his works. In both texts, Baldwin emphasizes how powerful gender stereotyping forces women into boxes so restrictive that their value comes solely from their ability to reproduce. Women are only vessels for new life, as is evident through Tishs and Eric’s mothers’ stories. In If Beale Street Could Talk the child represents hope, which is something that is vital and necessary to black lives. In â€Å"The Man Child† the child that died was merely a representation of the nuclear family; as the son and heir, Eric is the key focus in the narrative. As is typical through American inheritance practices, Eric, the first born male, will gain the land after his father dies. Therefore, Eric’s mother’s children have the ability to both own and gain land in comparison to Tish and Fonny’s child, who is born in a hellish wasteland. Ch aracters like Tish fall victim, at times, to internalized sexism, heteronormativity, and racism; Fonny faces similar circumstances. In the city and in black lives there is nothing to gain besides the representation of hope despite the treacherous conditions of their existence, at least in Baldwins narratives. The pressures of gender expression and masculinity exist as options in both texts, but it is Fonny’s expression of white hegemonic masculinity that causes him to end up in prison. Both texts proclaim that there are overwhelming gender policing forces that yield to violence, but if black men fall into those practices then their freedom at risk. Fonny explains the cycle in which oppressive forces disallow the existence of black masculinity: â€Å"They got us in a trick bag, baby. It’s hard, but I just want or you to bear in mind that they can make us lose each other by putting me in the shit† (Beale Street, 142). Though Fonny’s act of protecting Tish against the Italian Thug is justifiable by moral law, it is unacceptable for a black male to protect his partner at the expense of the pride or authority of white men. This act directly causes Fonny to end up in prison, as his target of retaliation is an individual who is allowed to exist within the confines of white American masculinity. In contrast to Fonny, Jaime expresses his masculinity by killing Eric and asserting his power over things that are meant to be owned. Jaime retorts when he is chastised for hurting the dog, â€Å"It is my beast. And a man’s got a right to do as he likes with whatever’s his† (The Man Child, 64). Jaime’s ability to own is something that Fonny, like other black characters in Baldwin’s work, is unable to experience because of his race. Though both texts have very different protagonists, the characters of Jaime and Daniel can be perceived as foils because they struggle with expressing their masculinity and feeling oppressed within their own liminal spaces or, simply, their bodies. Considering the naming of both these characters is vital when attempting to understand their roles as foil characters and as combatants against American ideological systems, especially in regards to masculinity. Baldwin’s â€Å"Here Be Dragons† talks explicitly about the violence that presents itself in American masculinity. Baldwin writes in regard to the American ideal of sexuality and masculinity that â€Å"This ideal has created cowboys and Indians, good guys and bad guys, punks and studs, tough guys and softies, butch and faggot, black and white. It is an ideal so paralytically infantile that it has virtually forbidden—as an unpatriotic act—the American boy evolve into complexity of manhood† (Here Be Dragons, 678). Sexuality is thus rooted in a type of violent dichotomy, as are other factors like race, gender, and masculinity. It is through this same theory that Daniel’s story becomes a tragic story of marginalization in ideology. Sexual violence, as Baldwin emphasizes in many of his texts, is a tool used for the sexual gratification of white men, and Daniel becomes yet another victim of this violence. Daniel explains, â€Å"I don’t believe there’s a white man in this country, baby, who can even get his dick hard, without he hear some nigger moan† (Beale Street, 108). The rape that Daniel experience in prison as well as the rape he witnessed both show the penetrative force of white ideology. Prison, according to this text, is an institution designed to oppress black men and stop them from existing in the very hellish conditions that white men have designed in the outside world. The naming of these two characters, Daniel and Jaime, highlights their significance both in and outside of the text. Baldwin’s adherence to certain theological beliefs is important for understanding the themes that characters represent, especially in regards to how Baldwin intermixes morality and secular ideology. Though Jaime’s name could be perceived as feminine or masculine, his violent actions can be viewed as a way for him to prove his masculinity by expressing it appropriately, or as any white American male would. Daniel’s name relates him to the character of Daniel in the bible. The lion’s den for Baldwin is New York and subsequently America, and the metaphorical lions are attacking Daniel, who is a vivid representation of the struggles of black masculine identity. Daniel is, perhaps, broken; he proclaims that the system itself is attacking his very existence. Jaime, in his nature, is privileged by the system and thus fully buys into it because his compliance will not lead to his execution. The fact that Daniel is presented as â€Å"feminine† because he openly cries, because he’s metaphorically owned by the state, and because he was raped in prison all allow Baldwin to show that, despite the similarities between Daniel and Jaime, Daniel’s mis-identification with masculinity causes him to experience violence and imprisonment while Jaime is merely forced to take agency. True masculinity, for Baldwin, is an opaque ideology that is undoubtedly flawed but undoubtedly exists for the characters that he presents in both narratives. Tish and Fonny’s fathers represent two sides of the same coin. In If Beale Street Could Talk, Baldwin represents the fluidity of masculinity, but in doing so he shows that black masculinity is a hindrance to social and political freedoms. Characters who are arguably liberated within the texts, such as Joe and Frank, struggle throughout the narrative to raise, and subsequently steal, enough money to pay for Fonny’s bond. When facing overwhelming pressure, Frank submits to the justice system: â€Å"It’s over. They got him. They ain’t going to let him go till they get ready. And they ain’t ready yet. And ain’t nothing we can do about it† (Beale Street, 188). Despite the fact that Frank and Joe fit into a hegemonic masculine role because they are no physically restrained by the state , they are not perceived as weak because of their emotions, and they have agency inside their homes and in their communities; still, their blackness still makes them feel hopeless in the face of their white oppressors. Their expressions of gender and masculinity do not give them power, especially when displaying power would be most significant in their lives and the lives of their family members. James Baldwin is a mastermind at exposing the turmoil behind the ideal of American masculinity. If Beale Street Could Talk and â€Å"The Man Child† both play a vital role in Baldwin’s narratives surrounding gender, sexuality, gender expression, and race. James Baldwin asserts, through these two texts, that his principal characters face similar oppressive forces due to their varying identities, but it is the black characters who are ostracized, caged, and subjected to violence. This condition of blackness, as Baldwin indicates, disallows for freedom of any kind to the point where characters are systematically oppressed and end up locked in jail or end up living in a metaphorical hell. Formula Mass (Weight) Versus Molecular Mass

Fomula mass and molecular mass are two values that express the size of a molecule. Do you know the difference between formula mass and molecular mass?The formula mass (formula weight) of a molecule is the sum of the atomic weights of the atoms in its empirical formula. The molecular mass (molecular weight) of a molecule is its average mass as calculated by adding together the atomic weights of the atoms in the molecular formula. So, since the definitions differ according to whether you are using the empirical formula or molecular formula for a molecule, its a good idea to understand the distinction between them. The molecular formula indicates the type and number of atoms in a molecule. The molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6, which indicates that one molecule of glucose contains 6 atoms of carbon, 12 atoms of hydrogen, and 6 atoms of oxygen. The empirical formula is also known as the simplest formula. It is used to indicate the mole ratio of elements present in a compound. The empirical formula of glucose would be CH2O. The formula mass and molecular mass of water (H2O) are one and the same, while the formula and molecular mass of glucose are different from each other. The formula mass (formula weight) of glucose is 30 (either no units or else grams per mole), while the molecular mass (molecular weight) is 180.156 g/mol. Whenever you see a molecular formula where you can divide the subscripts by a whole number (usually 2 or 3), you know to expect the formula mass will be different.

At present the set of Incoterms being used by the company is governed by the Incoterms 2010 which include; Rules for all modes of transport Free Carrier (FCA) Ex Works (EXW) Carriage and insurance paid to (CIP) Carriage paid to (CPT) Delivered at terminal (DAT) Delivered at Place (DAP) Delivered duty paid (DDP)(Gopalia, 2016) Rules for inland waterway and sea transport Cost and freight (CFR) Free Alongside Ship (FAS) Cost, Insurance and freight (CIF) Free on board (FOB) Now, here are a few Intercoms which are considered to be the best possible set of rules and regulations set for the buyer and the seller respectively: Best Incoterms for buyers FOB: Free on board incoterms is available for waterway or sea transport only. The origin point is the FOB point. Here, the buyer is in control of the freight and seller is liable to make the delivery to the origin port (Flood, Callson, Jablonski, Flood, 2014). DDU: Delivery duty paid is available with all modes of transportation. Here the seller has to deliver the goods to the buyers place and is liable for any sort of damages. The custom clearance is carried out by the buyer (Christopher, M., 2005). Best incoterms for sellers CFR: cost and freight is available for ocean transportation only. Here the delivery point has to be a sea port however, the seller is liable until the freight reaches the port and from here the seller cannot be held for any sort of damages and losses. FCA: Free carrier is available for all sorts of transportation modes. The origin might be the premises of the seller or the terminal of the carrier (Grant, 2008). The loading charges are sent to the buyer in this case. Furthermore, the buyer is in control of the freight routing. Carrier selection criteria Selecting the carrier for the transportation of goods is a tedious task. It is the responsibility of the logistics department to make certain that the carrier chosen for the transportation, be it via land, air or water is efficient enough to make the delivery in due time, keep the goods safe from damage and is cost effective(Scott, 2011). Efficient route planning: time is essence in logistics therefore, proper planning of the route must be chalked out and also it is required to ascertain that the carrier selected for the route is appropriate. For instance, if the delivery can be made earlier by means of using an air carrier mode, then using a land carrier would result in incurring extra cost, time and resource. The carriers selected for the job are reliable or not. There should be a clear agreement in between the parties in regards to the liabilities. The carrier company should be well aware of the nature and reputation of the company and is capable of functioning accordingly.
